花見: Sakura season

The Japanese make an event of going out to see cherry blossoms, Spring emerging.   This phenomena is rooted in Japan’s art and literature that savors Buddhism’s bittersweet appreciation of the inescapable changes in life.   Cherry blossoms bloom; a week later the blossoms fall to the ground, still perfect – young and fragile.

I remember when I first lived in Japan.  A Japanese man asked me why Americans like roses so much.  He personally found roses disgusting.  Admittedly, the rose bud and its mature flower is beautiful, but the flower will slowly decay…eventually turning black on its own branch.  He preferred the cherry blossom that perched on its branch for a very short time and then gracefully floated down to rejoin the earth.  Today the Japanese like roses as much as anyone else.  But, nothing is loved as much as  cherry blossoms.

Yoda and the Dalai Lama

The Kannon Buddha, the Dalai Lama and Yoda.  Similar views all.

Being invited to a special showing of an historical treasure is an honor.

The 500 year old Kannon Buddha is open for viewing at Jōkōji only once every 12 years.  I didn’t want to pass up this opportunity.  But, to be truthful, I did not think that I would learn much from this statute hidden in a little temple in a forgotten corner of Japan.  I was wrong.

Brought to Japan from India, through China and Korea, the story of the Kannon Buddha was introduced to Japan in the 6th century.  Though originally depicted as a male, Kannon in later years was given a gentler face and is dressed in the flowing gowns of a woman.  She has become the symbol of the divine mother or the divine feminine.

Kannon is a Bodhisattva (Japanese-Bosatsu).  This means that though she has achieved enlightenment, she has decided to wait for full ‘Buddhahood‘ until everyone else in the world can be saved.  Though she will be released from suffering at a later date, she has vowed to remain on earth in different reincarnations until all living things reach enlightenment.

I love this idea of the Bosatsu!   To be so unselfish to delay your own Buddhahood until everyone else reaches enlightenment.  This is the core of my ideal of motherhood, of womanhood, of mankind.  Life is not a ‘zero-sum’ game.’  There are no winners and no losers.  Life is a journey where all must be valued, all treated with compassion, all find peace and enlightenment.

Oh, and what about those 11 heads?  Kannon is the Juichimen Kannon.  Juichi [十一」means eleven and men 「面」refers to face or facet.

There are different explanation for the eleven heads.  On a simpler level, those heads spread kindness in all directions.  Or do the faces see the suffering in the world, and hope to give relief? On a more philosophical level, the 10 heads represent the 10 stages of the path to Bodhisattva needed to reach enlightenment.  The 11th head represents Buddhahood.  I guess I will have to get back to you on that.

It should be no surprise that the Dalai Lama is believed by the Tibetans to be a reincarnation of the Kannon Budhisattva.  Kannon represents compassion and the Dalai Lama’s words, though not scholarly or particularly eloquente, call for mankind to live in kindness,  “If you want others to be happy, practice compassion. If you want to be happy, practice compassion.”   “This is my simple religion. There is no need for temples; no need for complicated philosophy. Our own brain, our own heart is our temple; the philosophy is kindness.’

Dalai Lama

I saw the Dalai Lama 12 years ago.   I was one of fifty people standing in the early summer chill of the Town Hall Square (Raekoja plats) in Tallinn, Estonia.  I listened to his soft voice and his words dotted with laughter.  Dressed in long orange robes in contrast to the dour plaza, he reminded me of a real live Yoda, speaking simple words of wisdom.  “Kind, you must be.” (That’s Yoda pretending to be the Dalai Lama.)

A few minutes before seeing the Dalai Lama, I was at the Estonian Parliament meeting with Tunne Kelam, who now represents Estonia in the European Parliament.  Tunne Kelam was an important Estonian dissident during Soviet occupation.  During our numerous meetings, Tunne always made me feel that he had all the time in the world just to sit and chat with me.   After about an hour of conversation, I asked Tunne, “How are we doing for time today?”  He check his watch and laughed, “Maybe we should quit in 10 minutes, I don’t want to keep the Dalai Lama waiting.”

Tunne is an old friend of the Dalai Lama.  For decades the Tibetan leader and the Estonian dissident have talked about how to end foreign occupation of their homes.  Estonia now celebrates 21 years of freedom.

Tibet waits.

Perhaps this relationship between Estonia and Tibet is analogous to the Bosatsu ushering others into paradise, yet, staying behind to help others reach enlightenment.   Is Tibet and the Dalai Lama helping the rest of us and our nations reach freedom from suffering and a path to enlightenment?  And Tibet…

Seto Pottery

Once a little village nestled between bright green rice fields, Seto is now part of a contiguous megaregion surrounding Nagoya.

Seto is an ancient town famous for its pottery.  Say “Seto-mono” (瀬戸物 – lit. Seto things) and the Japanese imagine the ubiquitous blue and white porcelain from this village.  Not long ago, every building was a potter’s home and studio.  Today, there are also pottery factories that spit out cheap Seto style pottery for the Japanese consumer.

Seto is also home to master potters.  The art of producing yakimono (earthen ware, ceramics – 焼き物) is a skill passed down from father to son.

Seto has produced great potters.   A foreigner does not usually have the opportunity to see the work of the great masters.  These pieces of art are displayed at museums, at special art showings, and in the homes of the wealthy or at friends of the potter.  Auctioned at Christie’s, the pottery of masters sell for thousands of dollars.

The pottery culture and its customer base in Japan is different from most countries.  Pottery is one of the oldest arts in Japan and a potter and his pottery is highly valued.

It is understandable that pre-industrial Japan would need pottery.   Pottery was needed for eating and cooking and used as storage jars and funerary jars.

It amazes and pleases me that in contemporary Japan pottery is still highly valued and bought by many.  These ancient pottery ‘villages’ continue to operate as they did generations ago.  Japanese tourists visit pottery villages and bring home omiyage (gifts) of bowls or cups for friends and family.   The Japanese collect pieces of fine pottery for their tables.  There are numerous pottery festivals in different villages throughout the year.  The finest pottery is used in chanoyu.

The production of traditional pottery is worker intense and the pottery is more expensive than mass produced ware.  Traditional pottery, yakimono,  must compete with highly prized Western “China” including Lenox, Royal Doulton, Haviland, Herend, Waterford, and Limoge.  In Japan, there are also American and European purveyors of a lower tier of dinnerware: IKEA and Costco.  Even ‘fine China’ is available from Japan’s own Noritake factory.

So, why do ordinary Japanese consumers still buy handmade potteryBizen-yakiHagi-yakiImari-yakiKutani-yakiMino-yakiRaku-yakiSeto-yaki.

I believe there are many reasons:

  • Japanese pottery is unique and elegant.  The pottery from each region is different, distinguishable from pottery of other regions.  The pots can be distinguished by the way they are fired, their form, their color, and the kind of clay used in their making.  The potters use traditional, sometimes ancient, kilns.  The glazes on the finest pottery are made from ash from local natural materials of leaves or local wood.  The pottery is distinguished by its clay which comes from nearby clay deposits.

  • The Japanese love to eat and they appreciate fresh food that is sensitively displayed.  Japanese meals are made up of many okazu which require separate dishes.  Each entree is given a bowl or plate that is specially designed for only that entree.  A dish for tsukemono (Japanese pickles).  A bowl for udon.  A long flat plate for fish. Once a Japanese friend caught me at my apartment, eating cereal out of a rice bowl.  She was surprised and confused.  Didn’t I understand that I was eating my cereal in a RICE bowl?  Last April, my husband and I stayed at a ryokan (旅館 – Japanese inn) in Takayama, north of here.  For dinner we were each served 37 different small entrees on at least as many separate dishes.  No dish looked alike.  Each entree was artistically placed on a different kind of dish in a style of pottery from Bizen to Mino-yaki.

  • The Japanese have a tradition of giving gifts for many different occasions, personal and business.  On some of these occasions, fine pottery is the choice.  A fine piece of pottery from Bizen would be a respectful and appreciated gift, indicating that the visitor was grateful to the recipient for his friendship and help.
  • The Japanese government supports and encourages the art.  “Interest in the humble art of the village potter was revived in a folk movement of the 1920s by such master potters as Shoji Hamada and Kawai Kajiro. These artists studied traditional glazing techniques to preserve native wares in danger of disappearing. A number of institutions came under the aegis of the Cultural Properties Protection Division.” (Wikipedia)  In the early 1950’s the government set up a system to preserve the old arts, by awarding the name, National Living Treasure (人間国宝 Ningen Kokuhō), to a person who was essential to the preservation of Japanese culture and art.
  • Embedded in Japanese pottery lies the history of Japan, its arts and its culture.


On Thursday, I went to the Museum of Modern Ceramic Art, Gifu outside of Seto.  The temporary exhibit is the “Mino Ceramics Now 2012” display.  Many of the pieces in the modern pottery display are incredible.  I mean, unbelievable.  It is hard to believe that it was possible to make those pieces out of clay.  There are sculptures, refined bowls and a motorcycle ridden by a little boy resembling the folklore hero, Momotaro.

Hoever, it is the exhibit of pottery of the National Living Treasures that is the most breathtaking.  There you can see the work of Master Potter, Tsukamoto Kaiji 塚本快示 (1912-1990).  Tsukamoto used white clay in which he engraved delicate flowers, kanji, dragons.  He used a clear or faintly blue glaze.  His technique results in giving a whiff of design and color.   A refreshing breath of dignity and poise!

The architecture of the museum building is worth seeing.  An immense and sprawling complex, it hangs onto the edge of a hill.   There are 32 suspended columns that support the huge edifice and give the building flexibility in the case of an earthquake.  The complex, however, is showing its age.  In a country dotted with REALLY old and beautiful wooden buildings, it seems ironic to say that the building that looks old is a modern structure made of glass and concrete.  Are modern buildings expendable as a part of a throw away system?

It is free to enter the building and walk through the gift shops.  The special exhibit is only 500 ¥ for adults.  The exhibit is open from September to November 11th, 2012.  Highly recommended.

Guides – thank you

  Naoko Takabatake is a member of an active group of Jehova Witnesses in my neighborhood.  Naoko came to my door the first week I arrived.  She introduced herself.  To her credit, she never has tried to evangelize to me.  That first afternoon she took me to a local park and shared with me tea and kakigōri (shaved ice).  Once a week, Naoko guides me to good places to eat, shops and takes me to cultural sites.  She introduces me to her friends and gives me new words to add to my vocabulary.  Naoko and her husband took me to see the Mino exhibit.

    Norio-san and his wife, Tsumaki,  met us at a local sushiya-san the 2nd day we moved to Nagoya.  Without knowing much about us Americans, they warmly encouraged us to join them at the Seto festival in early September.  Norio-san’s daughter, Kumiko Murai and her family drove Don and me to the Seto Matsuri on September 8, 2012.  Norio-san generously gifted to us pieces of Seto-yaki and then Tsumaki made us a Japanese dinner made of fresh vegetables from her garden.
